Why Is Accessibility Still A Problem?
This Fall, a news story about a brand-new library in Queens, New York went viral in the disability community. Some of the library’s most aesthetically striking features were also grossly inaccessible to people with mobility impairments.
There are 2.2 Million new wheelchair users each year

What can we do about it as designers?

Shopping in wheelchair with extra weight could be even more frustrating.
Many smaller stores does not have shopping cart or basket.
Many tools designed for the public could be hard to use in wheelchair.

Harder to turn
Not very accessible
Unstable basket
Hard to move forward while pushing
Items Placed Too High
What if
Users can move freely in the wheelchair without worrying about the basket falling.
What if
Users no longer need assistant in the store.
What if
Wheelchair products can also be design for sustainability.

What was the hardest part of the design process for me?
The hardest part of the wheelchair grocery basket project was conducting user interviews on my own. As an introverted designer, approaching strangers, especially from a specific user group, was intimidating. To push through that, I attended the Disability Expo in Downtown LA two years in a row where I challenged myself to connect with users directly and have honest, meaningful conversations. It was uncomfortable at first but ended up being one of the most rewarding parts of the process.
